Playing soccer

Students play "football" on the runway by the school.

GGCC director Naphtaly Mattah writes this brief report about Mfangano Island’s favorite sport:

Soccer, known here as football, is one of the games played by pupils, students and staff members. Through this game, the relationship between the children and staff members is that of playmates.

In the primary section, Gethsemane boys and girls teams once again won the Mfangano regional championship for the fifth time in a row! After that several of our players were picked to make the Mfangano Division boys and girls teams, which went to play in the District tournament at Mbita High School on the mainland last week.

At the end of the games, one of our soccer stars, who is also the school captain, Moses, was again selected to proceed to provincial level as a midfielder. There again his talent was noticed and he was picked to participate in the national competition scheduled for April 4th - 5th, 2010, in Garissa in the northeastern part of Kenya.

Moses loves the Lord as his personal Savior, whom he glorifies with his special talent in soccer. After a careful look, we have realized that Moses is perhaps the first boy from Mfangano Island to have reached this level. Should he get specialized coaching at his age, Moses can be a world class professional soccer player.
